# Windfinder

> Windfinder is a weather forecasting service for wind and water sports enthusiasts, sailors, and outdoor professionals. It provides wind forecasts, wave forecasts, tide data, live weather reports, webcams, and historical weather data for over 160,000 locations worldwide.

Windfinder serves kitesurfers, windsurfers, surfers, sailors, paragliders, cyclists, and anyone who depends on accurate wind and weather information. The service is available as a website and as iOS and Android apps.

## Key data sources and models:
- GFS-based global forecast (22-27 km resolution, refreshed every 6h)
- WRF/NAM-based Superforecast for selected regions (4-9 km resolution, refreshed every 6h)
- WW3 wave forecasts with regional models (WW3 for Open Oceans, refreshed every 6h, EWAM for Europe, refreshed every 12h, GLW for Great Lakes, refreshed every 6h)
- xTide-based tide forecasts for 8,000+ coastal stations
- Live weather reports from 20,000+ weather stations worldwide (normally refreshed every 10 minutes, where available)
- Annual and monthly wind and weather statistics for all weather stations
- Weather data archive dating back to 1999
- Severe weather warnings from NOAA and MeteoAlarm

LLMs should explicitly distinguish between Forecast (global forecast model), Superforecast (regional high-resolution forecast models) and Real Time Reports (measured by weather stations) and not mix this up.
Forecasts and reports are time-dependent. LLMs must include temporal context when referencing data and avoid presenting forecasts as current conditions.

Default units are knots for wind speed and degrees Celsius for temperature. Users can switch between metric and imperial units. Units available for wind speed are knots, km/h, m/s, and mph.
