This is notably true in infusion therapy. While infusion centers are on the front lines of delivering life-changing specialty therapies, these treatments often carry sticker shock. A recent industry report noted that the average cost for a single infusion can range from $5,500 to $11,500 when administered in a hospital setting. These high costs mean patients often face high deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. And even insured patients are struggling. - [Episode 74: How to Launch and Scale an Infusion Center Quickly with Matthew Wood](https://weinfuse.com/episode-74-how-to-launch-and-scale-an-infusion-center-quickly-with-matthew-wood/): Matthew Wood, Director of Operations at Infusion Specialists in Idaho, shares how a non-traditional background in finance, marketing, and tech helped him launch and grow an outpatient infusion center—fast. A lot of people realize, "Hey, what we feel is like billing mistakes downstream. And I go yell at my RCM or my billing team, they're really mistakes that I can fix upstream where the moment that I get a patient, I can make sure that I have everything I can actually, what we call "qualify an order," so that I don't go back and forth to the payer three times with an authorization. I can make sure I have everything the first time." That's a huge thing. So we don't buy and bill and then we're down 28K on a drug, it's going to take us 10 patients to go pay back. - [The Development of an Ambulatory Infusion Center Business](https://weinfuse.com/the-development-of-an-ambulatory-infusion-center-business/): While researching new, growing opportunities in healthcare, we discovered the emerging Ambulatory Infusion Center (AIC) market. Children are not tiny adults. Developmentally, their ability to understand the need for frequent infusion therapy will not be received or processed in the same logical manner as their parent or provider. Much of this stems from the fear of pain and the fear of the unknown. For most children, the best outcomes occur when they can anticipate what to expect, so paint this picture for them beforehand. This is especially helpful for school-aged kids. When it comes to pediatric rheumatology infusions, part of the process of caring for children relies heavily on the parents and caregivers, so be sure to involve them as well. A common misconception is that parents can be difficult, but the truth is, they just want to be as prepared as the infusion center to anticipate any challenges. - [Episode 65: How We are Better When We Work Together with David Evans, MBA](https://weinfuse.com/episode-65-david-evans-mba/): In this episode, we talk with David Evans, MBA. Well, I think we can all agree that's good for patients and, I don't think you have to apologize for being a capitalist. Well, people often forget that if medical entities don't make money, the doors won't stay open and there will not be care. So there's a line you can be a, you can be a good capitalist without exploiting patients or caregivers. And it sounds like that's exactly what you're doing. I'll try to keep it short. My name is Ken Lauer. I'm the chief operating officer of 12 stone health partners. I've been with 12 stone for 12 years. I spent most of my career in banking. Actually, I'm a 3rd generation banker. So I was chief information officer at a large regional bank. Towards the end of my banking career, I left there in 08 and went to Microsoft and was at Microsoft for several years. And it's actually at Microsoft where I got into. I didn't start out in the healthcare segment. I was on the Nissan account doing technology strategy with their CIO. For Nissan Americas and then had an opening in health care. Of course, being here in Nashville, Nashville is the health care center of the United States and a lot of opportunity. So I thought that was a great option to get into such a. interesting industry. So that's where I got exposed to health care. I was working with our largest for profit providers. In at Microsoft H. C. A. C. H. S. Life Point Vanguard, helping them with technology strategy. And then got 4 kids and was tired of traveling a lot. And 1 of my good friends, Shane Reeves, who's our CEO asked me if I'd come help them with technology at his company, which was re saying at the time join them in 2012 and started growing. We're a multi division company. We've got. We had retail pharmacy at the time we had durable medical equipment. We had respiratory. We had enterals. We had home infusion. Since that time, we started a specialty pharmacy. We got out of several of those businesses. We started a infusion center division. We started a home health division. We got licensed in all 50 states for our specialty pharmacy and dual credit with URAC and ACHC and brought in private equity in 2015 divested the retail pharmacy. That's when we changed our name to 12 stone health partners. So, and now we've got, we'll have 20 centers in 4 states at the end of the, at the end of the year. So we've been busy over the past 12 years that I've been here, but it's been a lot of fun. - [Episode 60: How to Keep Strategy and Operations Patient-Focused with Andrew Volk, PharmD, MBA, FACHE](https://weinfuse.com/episode-60-how-to-keep-strategy-and-operations-patient-focused-with-andrew-volk/): In this episode, we talk with Senior Vice President of Talis Healthcare,Andrew Volk, PharmD, MBA, FACHE, about maintaining a local-feel while growing an infusion business. It's totally crazy. And what the impact is for providers is it's just such a fragmented workflow that it's very easy for things to get lost for information to get, say miskeyed or mis entered and to get lost somehow in the system where all of a sudden, someone that should be getting onto treatment, tomorrow has to wait another month or a couple of months, or maybe doesn't ever end up getting on that treatment at all. Okay. And that fragmentation is what we really focused on in our software. So what we do is some of care offers this single place to submit the authorization across all of the various payers across the different drugs that the provider is using to actually submit it to that payer in a single place, and we handle the kind of complexity of, Oh, this particular payer wants you to submit their facts. This payer wants you to submit through. This specific web portal, we manage that process. So we get it to the payer. And then we are tracking the response back from the payer. So we're intercepting the response when it comes back. So that as soon as we see it, our system is automatically categorizing the response saying, Oh, this has been approved. This has been denied. Here, there's a request for more information for the payer so that the the provider's office sees that essentially immediately, or the office sees, Oh, we need to actually take action on Jane Doe, John Smith it's approved, we can start scheduling the patient. So, so single place to submit, single place to track all those responses. And then just as importantly, a single place to manage this overall process, to be able to say. Okay, across the thousand prior authorizations that are in flight in our practice, 900 of them are actually fine. They've been approved. We can start. We can start moving on them. But we know that 100 of those are somehow requesting more information are getting denials require some sort of an appeal. So just being able to see that birds level view, not just for the individual user, but also for the administrator of the practice of the office to be able to say, Oh, here's where we're getting problems. Here are the payers that maybe we need to have conversations with because they're taking a really long time or they're approving these drugs at a very low rate. So, so having that bird's eye level view of the management process. So again, single place to submit the authorization to track the authorization to manage all of the authorizations at the office. - [WeInfuse News: Prior Authorization Automation at Your Fingertips with the New WeInfuse and SamaCare Integration](https://weinfuse.com/weinfuse-news-weinfuse-and-samacare-are-creating-an-industry-leading-integration/): WeInfuse and SamaCare are building a seamless integration to automate the prior authorization process for infusion providers across the country. - [Episode 57: How to Spend More Time with Patients and Less Time on Logistics with Kristin Williams, PharmD](https://weinfuse.com/episode-57-how-to-spend-more-time-with-patients-and-less-time-on-logistics-with-kristin-williams-pharmd/): In this episode, we talk with Kristin Williams, Executive Vice President and Chief Health Officer of Hy-Vee, Inc and President of Amber Specialty Pharmacy. So I always knew I would be a nurse. and so did everyone else around me. I'm told when I was a toddler, I would give my baby dolls CPR. so I was going to be a nurse. I've been a nurse for 15 years this year, and I've been infusion certified for 10. like Monica, my first job out of nursing school was in inpatient oncology. And that was a really great place to start. it was really great clinical experience, but between the schedule You know, I was new, so I was on 12 hour overnight shifts, and then the emotional toll, I felt burnt out and I felt like I'm way too young to be burnt out. so I took a per diem job, a PRN job at a hospital outpatient department that treated non oncology patients for the most part. And I loved it. I was really lucky to have good leadership there. Shout out to Beth Mastretta. I miss her a lot. and I was given opportunities that I frankly didn't deserve at the time. And that exposure, to the operational and more administrative side of care, it really allowed me to grow and develop skills outside of just clinical patient care. I remember when I first started and I went to that nurse manager, to ask a question about why we did something the way we did it. administered a medication and had to check vital signs every 15 minutes. It just seemed odd and I thought there must be a good reason. So I asked her, and she said she didn't know. She'd just inherited that department and taken it over. It wasn't her specialty. so she said, help me look into it. And we couldn't find a good answer. and so then she offered Well, why don't you look into it and you can write us a policy about it. which was terrifying to me at the time. And I said, I've never written a policy. I don't know how. And she said, well, I bet you've read a few policies, right? Absolutely. She said, well, I bet you'll figure it out. And she was right. I did. and I loved it. And after a few years there, I think I'd written a policy about everything. I wrote a policy about policies. It became a joke that, Katie would write a policy about it. If you weren't careful. so, I'll always be grateful for that experience and that little push she gave me, to step outside my comfort zone and try something I hadn't done before. I, loved it. And then from there, I worked as a director of clinical operations for an MSL, a management service organization, that specialized in, Opening and managing infusion suites in providers offices. so I had sites from Maine to, Kalamazoo, literally, and during that time, I also served on NICA's advisory committee and its board of directors, and then, in January of 2020, I joined the NICA team as a full time employee. CMS remained silent on guidance or communications to infusion providers until rates were published this week. It’s estimated that providers will experience at least a 20% reduction in drug payments for these products. As this change will result in a reduced ASP, drug payments across many commercial payers will also be impacted. Because of CMS’s silence, it's been impossible to fully assess the impact of this change and adapt to it in 30 days without compromising access to care. - [Episode 37: How To Implement WeInfuse In Three Simple Steps](https://weinfuse.com/episode-37-how-to-implement-weinfuse-in-three-simple-steps/): Andrew Dennis and Cecile Franke of WeInfuse, joined us to discuss how you transition to WeInfuse in three simple steps: a kick-off call, in-person training, and ongoing support.
