# Gamma Exposure (GEX)

Gamma Exposure (GEX) measures the net gamma position of options market makers (dealers) for a given stock or index. Because dealers must delta-hedge their options positions, their hedging activity creates real buying and selling pressure in the underlying stock.

**When GEX is positive:** Dealers are long gamma. They buy dips and sell rallies to hedge, which suppresses volatility and keeps price in a range.

**When GEX is negative:** Dealers are short gamma. They buy when price rises and sell when it falls (chasing price), which amplifies moves and increases volatility.
