Sometimes they define us—while one person may react to an event in a certain way, another reacts to the same event entirely differently. My curiosity about human beings, and what makes us tick, naturally led to my becoming more invested in learning about how we are shaped. I was just as fascinated by what stops people from growing as by what inspires and transforms them. This curiosity led me to specialize in trauma counseling.

But there is plenty of room for hope and healing. Trauma therapy can help you take charge again after something bad has happened to you. You work hard to bounce back, move on and forget what you have been through. Your loved ones may think you are fine, or sense that something is wrong. But if you have survived something terrifying, the echo of what you've been through sometimes just keep repeating. You might try to ignore it, or to drown it out, but it bursts forth and disrupts your life. Even though you work courageously and diligently to get on with a happy, productive life, you keep hearing that echo. This echo that you are hearing might be one of the common signs of trauma: avoidance, distractibility, bursts of anxiety, anger or shame. Any of these might be signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and PTSD therapy can help.

In 1924, Hans Berger invented the electroencephalogram (EEG) test, which records brain wave patterns that reflect different moods and states of mind. Then in 1941, Herbert Jasper discovered that those brain waves could be trained. In other words, you can actually teach your brain to stop engaging in certain unproductive emotional patterns and other symptoms and start engaging in more positive ones. This is possible due to neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to change.
