He also shares how IWP Career Services helped him land his first job in the national security field, and how he is now serving the United States as an Intelligence Analyst with BAE.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Madison Powers](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/17/the-iwp-internship-experience-madison-powers/): As I wrap up my internship at The Institute of World Politics, I am incredibly thankful for the experience I’ve gained as a National Security Research Intern. This role has allowed me to engage with complex global issues, refine my research and critical thinking skills, and learn from dedicated professionals in the field. I leave this experience with a stronger sense of purpose and a deeper commitment to contributing to national security and international affairs.
- [Rogue States in League: North Korea & Iran](https://www.iwp.edu/articles/2026/04/16/rogue-states-in-league-north-korea-iran/): A book review by Christopher C. Harmon, IWP
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Duncan Patton](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-duncan-patton/): During the spring of 2026, I had the pleasure of participating in The Institute of World Politics’ National Security and Intelligence Research Internship program. Through this program, I had the opportunity to further develop my research, writing, and presentation skills. The program went beyond simple academic research; through the weekly writing and presentation of briefs to my fellow interns and IWP personnel, I developed a more focused skill set for the national security field.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Brian Nio](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-brian-nio/): My time as an intern at The Institute of World Politics was nothing but a dream come true to work in our nation's capital. As this was my first time working in D.C., I felt fortunate to learn and grow not only as a person, but also as a professional during an interesting period in our nation's history. I learned from accomplished speakers and mentors, gaining exposure to the world of national security, as well as learning the skills necessary to become an analyst in intelligence and foreign affairs.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Alyssa Seufert](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-alyssa-seufert/): My internship with The Institute of World Politics was a series of firsts. This was my first semester away from my university, the University of Texas at Austin. It was my first time living in D.C. It was my first full-time internship. Those changes made the experience feel unfamiliar at first, but they also made it more formative. Being in a new environment, surrounded by people working in policy and national security, pushed me to take my academic interests more seriously and think about how they translate beyond the classroom.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Megan Fife](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-megan-fife/): Being an Institutional Advancement Intern at The Institute of World Politics (IWP) has given me the opportunity to meet amazing people in the security sector, explore D.C., and get hands-on experience in the field.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Aaron Veysman](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-aaron-veysman/): Over this internship, I have achieved a number of valuable goals that I sought coming into this experience. First of all, I have gained a further understanding of the methodologies behind effective communication to a variety of audiences, including principals, national security personnel, and among my fellow peers. Additionally, I had the opportunity to attend many fascinating events to further my knowledge of the national security world and understand the monumental shifts happening in the American foreign policy and national security spheres.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Meghann Barner](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-meghann-barner/): My time as a research intern at The Institute of World Politics has been a phenomenal experience. Every activity, whether it was war games, fireside chats, outings, or otherwise was meticulously thought out to enhance our education and preparedness for our future careers.
- [The IWP Fellowship Experience: Landon Ball](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-fellowship-experience-landon-ball/): My time as a Civic Thought and Statecraft (CTS) Fellow at IWP has been extremely valuable. As a recent college graduate, unsure of the path ahead of me, this program exposed me to so many different avenues for careers in international affairs and national security. It has helped me better understand how my background can translate into real-world opportunities and gave me a clearer sense of the roles I may want to pursue moving forward.
- [The IWP Fellowship Experience: Ayush Gupta](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-fellowship-experience-ayush-gupta/): I've really enjoyed my time at the IWP as a Civic Thought and Statecraft (CTS) Fellow. I came in not really knowing what my path forward would hold. Having had the time to explore different options, meet fellow interns with interesting ambitions, and just getting out into D.C. and seeing all of the options was really a cool and insightful experience.
- [The IWP Fellowship Experience: David McClain](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-fellowship-experience-david-mcclain/): My fellowship experience this semester was honestly one of the best opportunities I have had, and I can say that I really loved every minute of it. Being in Washington and getting to learn in such a hands-on environment made the experience feel much more meaningful than a normal classroom setting. I enjoyed how the internship combined professional development, policy exposure, and real-world experiences in a way that made me feel much more connected to the work being done in government and public service. It was a busy experience, but in a good way, and I feel very lucky that I got to be part of it.
- [The IWP Fellowship Experience: Miriam Fahmy](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-fellowship-experience-miriam-fahmy/): My time at The Institute of World Politics as a Civic Thought and Statecraft Fellow was a meaningful experience that helped me grow both academically and professionally. This fellowship experience was especially rewarding, considering it was my first professional experience as a senior studying government and international affairs. The program was particularly eye-opening and helped me narrow down my career path options and develop the skills necessary for these career choices. For example, I got the opportunity to develop my public speaking skills through the weekly intelligence and policy briefings the interns and fellows had to deliver. Each briefing helped me refine my ability to think critically, organize my thoughts, and present ideas in a clear and engaging way.
- [The IWP Fellowship Experience: Spencer Peng](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-fellowship-experience-spencer-peng/): My time at IWP has been a memorable experience, especially delivering my weekly briefs and participating in wargames. I particularly enjoyed Dr. Tim McCranor's seminars, which pushed me to think more critically about Machiavelli's The Prince, a text I had read many times.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Nikola Ilovski](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-nikola-ilovski/): My primary responsibilities at IWP centered on Institutional Advancement, where I supported the organization's donor engagement and development operations. This included tasks such as researching prospective donors, maintaining and updating donor records, preparing outreach materials, and supporting the administrative side of fundraising efforts. While this type of work is often behind the scenes, I came to appreciate how essential it is to sustaining an educational mission and the institutional infrastructure that makes the intellectual work possible.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: William Reed](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-william-reed/): Simply put, this was an amazing opportunity. Everything this program does is meant to help you learn, grow, and make yourself stand out amongst a sea of people hoping to do the same things you are. The ability to improve one's writing, research, and speaking skills is just the first half of the experience. Having the opportunity to visit a wide variety of government buildings and museums and learn how different agencies and organizations operate was eye-opening and showed all the different paths that are open to motivated individuals.
- [The IWP Fellowship Experience: Ryan Brennan](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-fellowship-experience-ryan-brennan/): The only way I could describe spending this past Spring 2026 with The Institute of World Politics as a Civic Thought and Statecraft (CTS) Fellow is utterly transformative. Having a theoretical, scholarly understanding of foreign policy and national security is leagues removed from the realities of these fields, and IWP bridges that very gap to empower shrewd statecraft in its students.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Amberlee Downen](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-amberlee-downen/): My time as a national security research intern at The Institute of World Politics was both challenging and rewarding. I most enjoyed the opportunity to contribute research on evolving security issues, from counterterrorism to great power competition. I was pushed to think critically and to engage with complex problems. I spent time digging through reports, analyzing trends, and connecting the dots between international developments and broader U.S. national security interests; this granted me a deeper understanding of the “why” behind policy decisions.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Persia](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-persia/): When I first started at The Institute of World Politics, I felt completely underqualified. Before the internship had even officially begun, my first task was to speak on a panel about the unrest in Iran. I was asked to speak on transitional plans, proxy violence, and the importance of this issue to U.S. national security. I remember thinking, how am I, an undergraduate, supposed to speak in front of national security professionals, the IWP President, faculty, and graduate and doctoral students in Washington, D.C., as if I am an expert? It felt intimidating, almost unreal. But at the same time, I knew I had something substantial to say. It was just a matter of stepping into that room, trusting the people who put me there, and believing in myself. That moment pushed me into a level of confidence I did not feel ready for, but only after speaking did I realize I actually was.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Sawyer Platt](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-sawyer-platt/): My time at The Institute of World Politics has been a great experience overall. I had the privilege of supporting research and analysis on how the CIA and JSOC can pivot from counterterrorism to focus more on great power competition. The varying range of topics covered allowed me to engage in my own research on niche topics such as the rise and implementation of Chinese Private Security Companies into the Belt and Road Initiative.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Olivia Fanders](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-olivia-fanders/): As a Multimedia Intern at the IWP, I came in with quite a different skill set than most of the other interns. However, through my more specialized internship, I was able to develop my video editing skills and see the effects of my work on the broader IWP community!
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Alexander Aznavoorian](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-alexander-aznavoorian/): I am grateful for my time as an intern at IWP. The program helped me develop skills critical to a successful career in national security. I learned how to give important policy and intelligence briefs, improved my research skills, and learned from professionals. The firesides chats were especially helpful in gaining a better understanding of the D.C. ecosystem and how our nation conducts foreign policy. I also thoroughly enjoyed our outings, especially to the Pentagon, which was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Faith Hall](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-faith-hall/): As an Events and Communications Intern, I supported events focused on national security, intelligence, and international affairs. I was part of the Institute's front-facing arm as we welcomed distinguished national security professionals to speak on important topics in national security and diplomacy. This required learning to present myself professionally but warmly and to be receptive to feedback from my supervisors (i.e., Shannon and Missy).
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Madison](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-madison/): My time at The Institute of World Politics (IWP) this semester as a National Security Research Intern was an incredibly rewarding and formative experience. I had the opportunity to engage deeply with complex national security and foreign policy issues while contributing to meaningful research projects. The hands-on nature of the internship allowed me to strengthen my analytical thinking, research, and writing skills in a professional environment that emphasized both rigor and collaboration.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Jason Teber](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-jason-teber/): My internship at The Institute of World Politics as a research intern was a highly valuable and formative experience that strengthened both my analytical skills and my understanding of national security issues. Throughout the program, I was exposed to complex geopolitical topics and was expected to engage with them in a structured, professional manner. The emphasis on clear, concise communication—especially through briefing formats such as BLUF—pushed me to think critically about how to present information effectively. This experience significantly improved my ability to synthesize large amounts of information into actionable insights.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Natinael Gurmu](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/04/10/the-iwp-internship-experience-natinael-gurmu/): My internship at The Institute of World Politics strengthened my ability to approach global issues with structure, discipline, and analytical clarity. Throughout the experience, I moved beyond theory and developed a more practical understanding of how strategic thinking is applied in real-world policy and security contexts.
- [David Torres (’25): Corporate Crisis Management](https://www.iwp.edu/students-alumni/alumni/2026/04/03/david-torres-25-corporate-crisis-management/): David Torres came to The Institute of World Politics with a strong interest in national security, and his M.A. program sparked a deeper interest in intelligence and crisis management.

- [Star Hy (’24): DSS Supervisory Special Agent](https://www.iwp.edu/students-alumni/alumni/2026/04/03/star-hy-24-dss-supervisory-special-agent/): “IWP and the State Department invested in me, and I have gotten a lot out of it. IWP sets people up for success. I have been able to put my education into practice.”
- [IWP Students Present at the 2026 Intelligence Studies Consortium Conference and Career Fair](https://www.iwp.edu/students-alumni/students/2026/04/02/iwp-students-present-at-the-2026-intelligence-studies-consortium-conference-and-career-fair/): The Intelligence Studies Consortium (ISC) held its 6th annual symposium on 24-25 March at Georgetown University’s Capitol Campus in Washington, DC.  Five IWP students presented the results of their academic research on three of the panels and in the first day’s afternoon poster session.  There were a whopping 600-plus registered attendees and students representing over a dozen schools, and IWP President Chris Glass and the IWP senior staff attended to meet with IWP student presenters. Additionally, IWP interns supported the logistics of the event.
- [Randall Judt (’20): Managing Essential Navy Directives](https://www.iwp.edu/students-alumni/2026/03/27/randall-judt-20-managing-essential-navy-directives/): An Army veteran, Randall Judt (’20) came to IWP using the GI bill while supporting the Department of the Navy in his professional role. Through his studies, Randall has gained deeper insight into the inner workings of government – knowledge that has made him more effective in advancing national security and supporting the men and women who serve.
- [Semaj McDowell (’23): Ensuring IT Infrastructure for Army Intelligence](https://www.iwp.edu/students-alumni/alumni/2026/03/27/semaj-mcdowell-23-ensuring-it-infrastructure-for-army-intelligence/): IWP alumnus Semaj McDowell spends his days ensuring that our Army Intelligence is equipped with the IT infrastructure it needs to stay ahead of the curve in our increasingly complex world.

- [The IWP Internship Experience: Nate Norris](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/03/18/the-iwp-internship-experience-nate-norris/): My advice for future IWP interns is to approach every challenge presented here with your best effort. The Institute was founded to fill a gap in statecraft, diplomatic, and intelligence that was not commonly taught in our nation's curriculum. Every aspect of the IWP internship experience ties into these necessities, from the briefings to the philosophy class you will take. Giving it your all will not go unnoticed!
- [The IWP Internship Experience: John Abdelmalik](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/03/18/the-iwp-internship-experience-john-abdelmalik/): My time as an intern at IWP has been an insightful and formative experience. As it was my first time in D.C., I felt fortunate to be part of a strong cohort that pushed one another to develop the skills required for our future careers. We learned from accomplished speakers, benefited from the support of IWP staff, and gained exposure to the professional standards expected in the fields of national security, intelligence, and international affairs.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Alexandra](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/03/18/the-iwp-internship-experience-alexandra/): My experience at The Institute of World Politics has truly been transformational. Coming into the program, I was an undergraduate student with little experience in the field of national security. Leaving now, I feel far more confident in what I know and my abilities to be successful in the field. The required intelligence and policy briefings forced me to move out of my comfort zone and helped me gain the necessary skills to speak clearly and present myself in a confident manner. The 615 class gave me an in-depth background to political philosophy and what principles American government is built on. Finally, the research project that we completed over the course of the program allowed me to explore a new topic in depth and gain a detailed understanding of the situation.

- [The IWP Internship Experience: Ethan Czaja](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/03/05/the-iwp-internship-experience-ethan-czaja/): During the fall of 2025, I had the privilege of serving as a research intern in The Institute of World Politics’ National Security, Intelligence, and International Affairs Graduate Pathway Program. My primary research focused on how the United States can draw lessons from its struggles in building partner forces in Iraq and Afghanistan to more effectively support European partners facing Russian hybrid warfare. Working under the guidance of IWP master’s students and my group’s doctoral advisor, Kyle Johnson, I deepened my understanding of how the CIA and U.S. Special Operations Forces shape conflicts, strengthen partners, and counter hostile influence abroad.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Henry Thompson](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/03/05/the-iwp-internship-experience-henry-thompson/): During my IWP internship, I had the opportunity to do a significant amount of research on Iran and the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, especially regarding Iran's relationship with Russia and China. I greatly enjoyed the research group that I worked with - not only were they enjoyable to be around, but we were able to work together well and achieve everything we set out to do.
- [The IWP Internship Experience: Jonathan](https://www.iwp.edu/iwp-internship-experience/2026/03/05/the-iwp-internship-experience-jonathan/): My time as a Research Intern with the Institute of World Politics was very rewarding. I was able to enhance my briefing, writing, and social skills within the program's helpful environment and great mentors. ## Books
- [China, Russia, and the Coming Cool War](https://www.iwp.edu/books/china-russia-and-the-coming-cool-war/): This brief volume is designed to clarify the character of America’s strategic rivalry with Russia and China and how the United States and its allies might prevail without enduring a total war or a massive nuclear exchange. The volume consists of four chapters and an appendix. The first chapter, “Winning the Coming Cool War,” describes what America and its closest allies must do over several decades to prevail in a “cool war,” in which collective analysis sharing and the securing of information will be far more important to secure victory than credibly threatening massive destruction with nuclear or conventional weapons.
- [American Diplomacy Towards Lebanon: Lessons in Foreign Policy and the Middle East](https://www.iwp.edu/books/american-diplomacy-towards-lebanon-lessons-in-foreign-policy-and-the-middle-east/): Lebanon's significance to the Middle East and the global arena is greater than its small size suggests - bordering Israel and Syria, it holds a geo-strategic role as the playing field for their competition as well as for their allies, America and Iran. This book examines how American diplomacy has responded to the intersection of local, regional, and international factors in Lebanon.
- [Integrated Deterrence and Cyberspace](https://www.iwp.edu/books/integrated-deterrence-and-cyberspace/): This book was edited by IWP professor Dr. Joseph Billingsley. To download a pdf of the book, please visit National Defense University Press.
- [Światy Islamu (Islamic Worlds)](https://www.iwp.edu/books/swiaty-islamu-islamic-worlds/): A book by Dr. Marek Jan Chodakiewicz, entitled Światy Islamu (Islamic Worlds), was released this past September in Poland.
- [Warfare in Peacetime: Proxies and State Powers](https://www.iwp.edu/books/warfare-in-peacetime-proxies-and-state-powers/): Warfare in Peacetime offers an expansive and elaborated portrait of overseas proxy wars. The structure and substance will prepare observers, analysts, and participants seeking to understand challenges before American and other statesmen. The work helps frame the morass in Syria, with all its foreign links; the contest for influence in Libya, where innumerable hands vie for dominance; the fighting in Yemen, where Houthi Shia organizations backed by Iranian sponsors battle Sunni tribes; and life along the borders of Russian expansionism, where Ukrainians plea for outside assistance, including weapons from Washington. Such ongoing “warfare in peacetime” has a thousand precedents in a dozen ages, including our day, and some of the patterns are explored along with detailed case studies.
- [The Past as Prologue: Over There in American History](https://www.iwp.edu/books/the-past-as-prologue-over-there-in-american-history/): The Past as Prologue: "Over There" in American History, a new book by Dr. John Tierney, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.
- [Servants of the Devil: The Facilitators of the Criminal and Terrorist Networks](https://www.iwp.edu/books/servants-of-the-devil-the-facilitators-of-the-criminal-and-terrorist-networks/): Since the end of the Cold War, liberal capitalism has spread worldwide without any significant ideological rivalry, characterized by the frenetic search for an ever-increasing return on capital and constantly-increasing profits, a generalized un-concern for the moral values of liberalism, and for social inequalities and human misery.
- [A Citizen’s Guide to Terrorism and Counterterrorism](https://www.iwp.edu/books/a-citizens-guide-to-terrorism-and-counterterrorism/): This Citizen's Guide addresses the public policy issues of terrorism and counterterrorism in the United States after Bin Laden's death. Written for the thinking citizen and student alike, this succinct and up-to-date book takes a "grand strategy" approach toward terrorism and uses examples and issues drawn from present-day perpetrators and actors.
- [L’Etica del Nazionalismo](https://www.iwp.edu/books/letica-del-nazionalismo/): This March, IWP Research Professor Dr. Paul Coyer’s new book, L’Etica del Nazionalismo (The Ethics of Nationalism) was released in Italy.
- [O cywilizacji śmierci [About the Civilization of Death]](https://www.iwp.edu/books/o-cywilizacji-smierci-about-the-civilization-of-death/): Another book by Dr. Marek Chodakiewicz has just been published in Poland. It is entitled O cywilizacji śmierci .
- [Heaven on Earth: The Rise, Fall, and Afterlife of Socialism](https://www.iwp.edu/books/heaven-on-earth-the-rise-fall-and-afterlife-of-socialism/): Socialism was man's most ambitious attempt to supplant religion with a doctrine claiming to ground itself in “science.” Each failure to create societies of abundance or give birth to “the New Man” inspired more searching for the path to the promised land: revolution, communes, social democracy, communism, fascism, Arab socialism, African socialism. None worked, and some exacted a staggering human toll. Then, after two centuries of wishful thinking and bitter disappointment, socialism imploded in a fin de siècle drama of falling walls and collapsing regimes. It was an astonishing denouement but what followed was no less astonishing. After the hiatus of a couple of decades, new voices were raised, as if innocent of all that had come before, proposing to try it all over again.
- [Human Liberty 2.0: Advancing Universal Rights in the Digital Age](https://www.iwp.edu/books/human-liberty-2-0-advancing-universal-rights-in-the-digital-age/): A powerful look at the real-life heroes and heroines who have changed the world using social media to advance the cause of human rights and dignity.
- [No God, No Civilization: The New Atheism and the Fantasy of Perpetual Progress](https://www.iwp.edu/books/no-god-no-civilization-the-new-atheism-and-the-fantasy-of-perpetual-progress/): What does the world get from God? What does the world lose when it loses reason? For centuries, an aggressive secularism has fought to occupy the place once held by religion in Western society.
- [Underestimated: Our Not So Peaceful Nuclear Future](https://www.iwp.edu/books/underestimated-our-not-so-peaceful-nuclear-future/): With the world focused on the nuclear crisis in Iran, it is tempting to think that addressing this case, North Korea, and the problem of nuclear terrorism is all that matters and is what matters most. Perhaps, but if states like Russia and Pakistan become more willing to use their nuclear weapons to achieve military advantage, and if nuclear weapons-related technology and materials continue to spread, the problem of proliferation will become much more unwieldy. In this case, U.S. security will be hostage not just to North Korea, Iran, or terrorists, but also to more nuclear proliferation, diplomatic miscalculations, and wars between a much larger number of possible players (including some of our closest allies) that could go nuclear. This, in a nutshell, is the premise of Underestimated: Our Not So Peaceful Nuclear Future, Second Edition, which explores what nuclear futures we may face over the next 3 decades and how we currently think about this future. Will nuclear weapons spread in the next 20 years to more nations than just North Korea and possibly Iran? How dire will the consequences be? What might help us avoid the worst? This book supplies the answers.
- [The Terrorist Argument: Modern Advocacy and Propaganda](https://www.iwp.edu/books/the-terrorist-argument-modern-advocacy-and-propaganda/): From chants and pamphlets to the Internet, terrorist propaganda can be deadly effective.
- [The Grand Strategy that Won the Cold War: Architecture of Triumph](https://www.iwp.edu/books/the-grand-strategy-that-won-the-cold-war-architecture-of-triumph/): This book demonstrates that under the leadership of President Ronald Reagan and through the mechanism of his National Security Council staff, the United States developed and executed a comprehensive grand strategy, involving the coordinated use of the diplomatic, informational, military, and economic instruments of national power, and that that grand strategy led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
- [For the Least of These: A Biblical Answer to Poverty](https://www.iwp.edu/books/for-the-least-of-these-a-biblical-answer-to-poverty/): Today, many thoughtful and compassionate Christians are addressing the challenge of alleviating poverty. But while much progress has been made, many well-intentioned efforts have led Christians to actions that are not only ineffective, but leave the most vulnerable in a worse situation than before. Is there a better answer?
- [Trasnformacja czy niepodległość?](https://www.iwp.edu/books/trasnformacja-czy-niepodlego/): Trasnformacja czy niepodległość?  (Gdańsk: Patria Media, 2014) assesses the past quarter-century of post-communism in Poland (1989 - 2014).
- [Hoover’s Secret War against Axis Spies: FBI Counterespionage during World War II](https://www.iwp.edu/books/hoovers-secret-war-against-axis-spies-fbi-counterespionage-during-world-war-ii/): The world was at war, America precariously poised on the sidelines. But already a second secret war was well underway. While he fought on the home front to consolidate the FBI's intelligence gathering power, J. Edgar Hoover was conducting an all-out campaign to make his agency America's first foreign espionage service--a campaign that would lead to an uneasy alliance with British intelligence in a brilliantly successful operation to undermine Germany.
- [Twilight of Abundance](https://www.iwp.edu/books/twilight-of-abundance/): On March 14, Regnery Publishing, Inc. released a new book by IWP research fellow David Archibald entitled Twilight of Abundance: Why Life in the 21st Century will be Nasty, Brutish, and Short.
- [Notes from the Other Side of Night](https://www.iwp.edu/books/notes-from-the-other-side-of-night/): This book is a diary-memoir written on the occasion of the author's return with her family to her native country, Romania, in 1975.
- [Intermarium: The Land between the Black and Baltic Seas](https://www.iwp.edu/books/intermarium-the-land-between-the-black-and-baltic-seas/): History and collective memories influence a nation, its culture, and institutions; hence, its domestic politics and foreign policy. That is the case in the Intermarium, the land between the Baltic and Black Seas in Eastern Europe. The area is the last unabashed rampart of Western Civilization in the East, and a point of convergence of disparate cultures.
- [Między Wisłą a Potomakiem](https://www.iwp.edu/books/midzy-wis-a-potomakiem/): Entitled Między Wisłą a Potomakiem (Between the Vistula and the Potomac), this work aims to answer several important questions.
- [Soulmates: Resurrecting Eve](https://www.iwp.edu/books/soulmates-resurrecting-eve/): In this book, Dr. Pilon argues for a return to an egalitarian view of men and women, found in the original Genesis narrative, as reflected through Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
- [Stalin’s Secret War: Soviet Counterintelligence Against the Nazis, 1941-1945](https://www.iwp.edu/books/stalins-secret-war-soviet-counterintelligence-against-the-nazis-1941-1945/): The Soviet-German War of 1941-1945 was the most extensive intelligence/counterintelligence war in modern history, involving the capture, torture, deportation, execution, and "doubling" of tens of thousands of agents--most of them Soviet citizens.
- [Leading the Way](https://www.iwp.edu/books/leading-the-way/): "Santoli traveled to military bases and headquarters around the country interviewing career personnel who served during the troubled Vietnam years and the postwar period when morale plummeted in all branches of the service."
- [Full Spectrum Diplomacy and Grand Strategy](https://www.iwp.edu/books/full-spectrum-diplomacy-and-grand-strategy/): Full Spectrum Diplomacy and Grand Strategy offers a solution to one of the greatest weaknesses in US foreign policy that has exacerbated the unprecedented anti-Americanism of recent years--the US government's inability to conduct the "full spectrum" of diplomatic arts and integrate them with the other arts of statecraft at the level of grand strategy.
- [Ten African Heroes: The Sweep of Independence in Black Africa](https://www.iwp.edu/books/ten-african-heroes-the-sweep-of-independence-in-black-africa/): Up close and personal, this book takes a look at African leaders who ignited independence in Black Africa during the 1960s through the eyes of two American forerunners who knew them well.
- [Hearts of Gold or a Golden Harvest?](https://www.iwp.edu/books/hearts-of-gold-or-a-golden-harvest/): Hearts of Gold or a Golden Harvest? rejects the pop-cultural-cum-post-modernist image of a Polish Christian benefiting from the Holocaust and, instead, recognizes a variety of nuanced attitudes of the gentiles toward the great Jewish tragedy.
- [So Poland Be Polish (Zeby Polska byla polska)](https://www.iwp.edu/books/so-poland-be-polish-zeby-polska-byla-polska/): The work, entitled Zeby Polska byla polska or So Poland Be Polish, is an anthology of the Polish nationalist, anti-Nazi, anti-communist underground press during the years 1939-1950.
- [Malign Neglect](https://www.iwp.edu/books/malign-neglect/): The Menges Hemispheric Security Project of the Center for Security Policy Presents the Proceedings of the Second Annual Capitol Hill National Security Briefing on Latin America, focused on current challenges to democracy, human rights and regional stability in the context of threats to U.S. national security.
- [Expropriated Memory](https://www.iwp.edu/books/expropriated-memory/): Zagrabiona Pamiec. Wojna w Hiszpanii 1936-1939 (Expropriated Memory: The War in Spain, 1936-1939), addresses the issue of historical memory and propaganda regarding the conflict. Prof. Chodakiewicz focuses on factual and ideological distortions produced by the Communist spinmeisters persisting into contemporary times.
- [Islamic Gunpowder Empires: Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals](https://www.iwp.edu/books/islamic-gunpowder-empires-ottomans-safavids-and-mughals/): Islamic Gunpowder Empires provides readers with a history of Islamic civilization in the early modern world through a comparative examination of Islam's three greatest empires - the Ottomans (centered in what is now Turkey), the Safavids (in modern Iran), and the Mughals (ruling the Indian subcontinent).
- [Toward a Grand Strategy Against Terrorism](https://www.iwp.edu/books/toward-a-grand-strategy-against-terrorism/): A team of nearly two dozen authors-all associated with the Marshall Center, the joint German/American research and teaching institution in Garmisch-composed this extensive book, published May 2010.

- [The Public Diplomacy Reader](https://www.iwp.edu/books/the-public-diplomacy-reader/): The first in the IWP course reader series, this edited volume provides a look at slices of public diplomacy: the art of communicating with foreign publics to influence international perceptions, attitudes and policies. Like any art form, the real definition of public diplomacy is subjective, and can be the source of lively and often bitter debates.  Rather than attempt to create a specific definition of public diplomacy, The Public Diplomacy Reader takes some of the most insightful and historically significant writings, statements and official documents, from a variety of professional disciplines and political perspectives, so the reader can develop his or her own sense of what the field is all about.  This book makes no pretensions about completeness. The editor found it challenging to keep it under 500 pages of actual text. Here is how The Public Diplomacy Reader is designed to serve the user: To provide in a single volume a useful primer on public diplomacy, straight from some of the leading thinkers and practitioners across time and culture.ISBN: 978-0-6151-5465-7     $34.95 paperback.  $49.95 hardcover.
- [Fighting the War of Ideas like a Real War](https://www.iwp.edu/books/fighting-the-war-of-ideas-like-a-real-war/): This ground-breaking monograph departs from the conventional view of public diplomacy and international communication in time of war and argues for deploying messages as weapons of attack against the terrorists and other extremists.
Proposing an immediate-term strategy that requires no bureaucratic reorganization or major budgetary changes, Fighting the War of Ideas like a Real War is designed for quick implementation in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. The book complements the Defense Science Board's 2004 report on strategic communication, the State Department's evolving public diplomacy strategy, and the joint Army/Marines Counterinsurgency Field Manual FM 3-24 of 2006.
- [The Origins of FBI Counterintelligence](https://www.iwp.edu/books/the-origins-of-fbi-counterintelligence/): As the world prepared for war in the 1930s, the United States discovered that it faced the real threat of foreign spies stealing military and industrial secrets-and that it had no established means to combat them. Into that breach stepped J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI.
- [Why America is Such a Hard Sell](https://www.iwp.edu/books/why-america-is-such-a-hard-sell/): Why does America consistently receive such low ratings in opinion polls around the world? The answer, as Pilon explains, lies not just in America's overtly forceful actions but in the construction and presentation of its self-image. Scholars and policymakers alike will find Why America Is Such a Hard Sell both a penetrating analysis of America's current efforts in public diplomacy and a prescription for delivering a more appealing self-portrait to the world.
- [Every Vote Counts](https://www.iwp.edu/books/every-vote-counts/): “Every Vote Counts carries an underlying message that democracy is attainable on every continent and can help make the world a more peaceful and humane place..... - [Chasing Ghosts](https://www.iwp.edu/books/chasing-ghosts/): The turbulent occupation of Iraq has once again embroiled the United States military in an unconventional war. Chasing Ghosts is a study of unconventional warfare in American military history and its implications for the present and future.
- [The Massacre in Jedwabne](https://www.iwp.edu/books/the-massacre-in-jedwabne/): On July 10, 1941, the Jewish inhabitants in the small Polish town of Jedwabne were massacred by German policemen and some Polish townsmen and peasants. Chodakiewicz provides us with a criminal investigation of this mass murder. In this detailed study of a small area in Poland, Chodakiewicz examines the conditions that led to the heinous slaughter of Jedwabne's Jewish population. A dominant interpretation of this event depicts the Germans as the perpetrators of the crime while the Poles looked on. An alternative version suggests that the Germans plotted the crime, while the Poles executed the slaughter. The author argues that these two competing theses are not supported by the available evidence. Despite the limitation of sources, Chodakiewicz emphasizes a comprehensive methodology using all available documents, testimonies, oral recollections, and forensic and other physical evidence to reconstruct the history. In addition, Chodakiewicz provides an alternative interpretation to the dominant paradigms concerning Jewish-Polish relations in general and the mass murder in Jedwabne in particular.
- [Dismantling Tyranny](https://www.iwp.edu/books/dismantling-tyranny/): Dismantling Tyranny is the first significant study of how new democracies handled the legacy of the secret police of the previous totalitarian regimes. Professor John Tierney, Jr. takes a behind-the-scenes look in his newest book, The Politics of Peace: What's Behind the Anti-War Movement?, just published by the Capital Research Center.

## Courses
- [Chinese Intelligence and Security Services](https://www.iwp.edu/courses/chinese-intelligence-and-security-services/): The supreme leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) always has relied directly and exclusively on the Chinese intelligence and security services to maintain its totalitarian control of the members of the CCP; the Chinese population; and domestic politics.  The first role of the intelligence and security services is to preserve the monopoly of the CCP over all political power in China.  The CCP also uses the intelligence and security services to target opposition groups such as the Falun Gong and critics living outside China; surveil the Chinese diaspora; and conduct political influence operations against the United States, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, and other countries.  Since the end of the Cold War, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) intelligence organizations have assumed a progressively greater role in collecting human and technical intelligence against the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, and India, and in developing advanced cyber warfare, artificial intelligence, and counter-space capabilities directed mainly against the United States.

- [Foundations in Political and Economic Freedom](https://www.iwp.edu/courses/foundations-in-political-and-economic-freedom/): What does it mean to be free? Political philosophers, economists, political scientists, and ordinary people have conceptualized freedom in many ways. Economic freedom often refers to the freedom to earn an honest living, choose your occupation, enter voluntary exchanges, freely make contracts with others, decide how to use your own property, and pursue productive projects. Political freedom refers to the freedom to participate in civic life, whether through association, assembly, speech, press, protest, or voting. In this course, we ask questions about how these freedoms relate to each other. Can these freedoms be separated from each other? Does undermining one form of freedom threaten the other? What types of institutional arrangements are possible? In this course, we use economics to investigate these questions.
