# CloudCannon

> CloudCannon is a Git-based content management system (CMS) that gives non-technical editors a visual editing interface for static sites built with Astro, Eleventy, Hugo, Jekyll, Next.js, Nuxt, SvelteKit, and other SSGs. All content is stored in your Git repository — no proprietary database, no vendor lock-in.

Important notes:

- CloudCannon sits on top of your existing codebase and Git workflow, providing editors with a way to update content without writing code.
- CloudCannon supports GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket as Git providers. Every editor action results in a Git commit.
- The primary way to enable visual editing for Astro sites is through **Editable Regions** — HTML `data-` attributes and web components you add to your Astro layouts and components. Editable Regions work with your existing code; you don't need to restructure your project.
- **Bookshop** is an alternative (and older) approach to visual editing that uses a component development framework with its own directory conventions. Editable Regions are the recommended path for new Astro projects.
- CloudCannon provides four editing interfaces: the **Visual Editor** (live page preview with inline editing via Editable Regions), the **Content Editor** (WYSIWYG Markdown editing), the **Data Editor** (structured data and front matter editing), and the **Source Editor** (in-browser code editing).
- Hosting is included on all plans (CDN via Cloudflare), but you can also deploy to any hosting provider that supports Git-based deploys.
- CloudCannon configuration lives in a `cloudcannon.config.yml` file at the root of your repository.
