- [AGS Cleveland Show 2026](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-cleveland-show-2026): It was cold and drizzly when we set out on Friday morning to make the long trip to Cleveland. But our spirits brightened as we rolled up the M40 amidst a river of cowslips stretching from Oxford all the way to Warwick, and intermittently thereafter. The roads were packed, but with cars rather than lorries, so all three lanes were doing 70mph, and there were few hold-ups. By the time we reached the A1(M) north of Leeds, the cowslips were mostly replaced with primroses, suggesting that spring was slowly finding its way northwards.
- [AGS PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION 2025](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-photographic-competition-2025-2): The AGS Photographic Competition this year attracted a total of 379 images from 24 entrants across the nine classes, an increase on last year. The high standard of photographs submitted meant that the competition in most classes was very closely contested and judging quite rigorous. When there are so many entries, images with any technical weaknesses are quickly discarded, and it is the pictures with an additional ‘wow factor’ which tend to stand out from the judges’ short list. Often this ‘wow’ is a result of simple digital editing to adjust brightness and contrast, rather than a feature of the original image. The rarity of the plant does not affect how a photo will do – we are looking for the best photograph, but it does sometimes help if the plant is unfamiliar, rather than one we see in the competition every year.
- [There’s nothing plastic about the plants today; all perfectly proportioned in every way and you didn’t need to dig to find the gold](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/theres-nothing-plastic-about-the-plants-today-all-perfectly-proportioned-in-every-way-and-you-didnt-need-to-dig-to-find-the-gold): In previous diaries at this time of year I have reflected on the flowering of the cherry trees outside the alpine yard. They started to flower on 2 March this year and the alpine team use this measure as being the start of spring. After the dark days of winter it certainly lifts the spirits. I have included here several pictures of plants that I’ve shown over the past two years as these are old friends that should be celebrated and appreciated in the moments that they shine. Prunus itosakura f. ascendens ‘Rosea’ has a specific epithet from the Japanese – ito – thread and Sakura – cherry blossom, known as the thread cherry. All pictures were taken on 09 March 2026.

- [AGS/SRGC Hexham Spring Show 2026 Report](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-srgc-hexham-spring-show-2026-report): The Hexham Show, held in the Social rooms of the large mart complex, welcomes the distant exhibitor, whether from England, Scotland, and even on occasion Wales and Ireland with adjacent access to the A69, ample, convenient parking, a multiplicity of nursery stands and a large cafeteria with a tempting variety of hot food and drinks available throughout the day. Consequently, this is always a popular show, and the benches were packed with colour and 375 plants on this cold, blustery day, but the number of exhibitors totalled a rather disappointing 36, with noticeable lacunae both in the junior classes, and from the north on what was a ‘Scottish rules’ day.
- [As the annual colour change on the rock garden unfolds, you’ll get all the “bear” facts in this diary](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/as-the-annual-colour-change-on-the-rock-garden-unfolds-youll-get-all-the-bear-facts-in-this-diary): The very mild weather we have enjoyed in the rock garden has helped keep the leaves on the trees but there are now some that are fully bare. There has been much to enjoy this year in the garden and more to look forward to next year. There is still much to see when you look closely. All pictures were taken on 8th November 2025.
- [On the rock garden today you could switch between and amplify the views without any resistance](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/on-the-rock-garden-today-you-could-switch-between-and-amplify-the-views-without-any-resistance): All pictures were taken on 23rd December 2025 unless overwise stated
- [If you peek behind the curtains you won’t be blinded by the views of the rock garden today](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/if-you-peek-behind-the-curtains-you-wont-be-blinded-by-the-views-of-the-rock-garden-today): All pictures were taken at Wisley on 11 December.
- [No need to trek to the Rock Garden today and it’s poles apart from what you can see in the summer](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/no-need-to-trek-to-the-rock-garden-today-and-its-poles-apart-from-what-you-can-see-in-the-summer): I took the pictures for my last two diaries in December 2025 on rather dull days. Today the weather seemed much brighter and even still in the middle of winter there are signs that the garden is stirring again. All pictures were taken 18th January 2026.
- [There are no speed limits or red flags in the rock garden at Wisley today. No need to engage in any form of pursuit to enjoy the fine views.](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/there-are-no-speed-limits-or-red-flags-in-the-rock-garden-at-wisley-today-no-need-to-engage-in-any-form-of-pursuit-to-enjoy-the-fine-views): The first diary of 2026 was done ten days ago; therefore the garden appears similar. There are subtle changes as the days lengthen and the sun offers more warmth than just a few weeks ago. All pictures were taken on 28.01.2026.
- [Have a break, have a quick trip around the rock garden, the experience is bar none](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/have-a-break-have-a-quick-trip-around-the-rock-garden-the-experience-is-bar-none): It was nice to see some winter sunshine in the garden today and the plants all seemed to be basking in the light. It was as if they all knew it had been wet and the forecast was for more of the same. All pictures were taken on 09 February 2026.
- [AGS/SRGC Show Report, Kendal 14th March 2026](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-srgc-show-report-kendal-14th-march-2026): It was so good to welcome back this show after its absence last year as this is one of the few opportunities we have of getting growers based on both sides of the border together to show and swap knowledge.

- [AGS Kendal Show 2026](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-kendal-show-2026): It is a long way from Farnham to Kendal. We started out on Thursday evening, driving up to stay overnight with family in Nottingham, which made the Friday drive to Kendal much easier. There was time to make a stop at a garden or nursery on the way, but the temperature was in low single figures, so we decided not to, and arrived at our hotel early in the afternoon.
- [Sarah’s Diary March 2026](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/sarahs-diary-march-2026): We have finally made it through what has officially been recorded as the most miserable winter on record. Temperatures have lifted, watering has increased again, and it feels as though a sense of joy has returned to the garden and life in general. The pace has shifted almost overnight, with plants emerging at speed and the alpine house waking up properly for the season ahead.
- [Early Spring AGS Show 2026 Report](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/early-spring-ags-show-2026-report): The lousy winter continued. We started preparing for the Early Spring Show in Chelmsford on the Thursday afternoon in the rain, drove through the rain to our accommodation in Braintree on the Friday and guess what was falling from the sky as we parked outside the show marquee? The dull and cold winter and high humidity countrywide had not helped the plants, most of which were rather late resulting in a very different display from previous years. Nevertheless, a huge number of plants and other goodies were carried into what has become more or less a covered market. The nursery stalls were loaded with all sorts of horticultural delights and remained busy for most of the day.
- [Steve Furness/The Alpine Plant Centre open days](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/steve-furness-the-alpine-plant-centre-open-days): Steve Furness/The Alpine Plant Centre will be open for NGS open days & plant sales on;
- [AGS Loughborough Spring Show 2026](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-loughborough-spring-show-2026): The weather on our trip to Loughborough was better than in previous weeks, and the roads were lined with the white blossom of Cherry Plum. Even at 8am the hall was busy, and filling with plants. I had time for a quick scan round the plant stalls, and a chat with some of the nurserymen I hadn’t seen yet this year. By the time I returned to the show hall, they were almost ready to start judging.
- [Loughborough AGS Spring Show 2026 Report](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/loughborough-ags-spring-show-2026-report): Dodging ‘pop-up’ road works and potholes seems to be getting normal nowadays when travelling to shows. Having travelled from a northerly direction I was about 1 mile from Barrow-on-Soar, only to find a road closed for repair, but luckily an alternative route only meant a further 5 minutes added to my travelling time.

- [Hexham Flower Show and Plant Fair](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/hexham-flower-show-and-plant-fair): See a wide range of alpine and hardy plants at this show in conjunction with the Scottish Rock Garden Club. Browse the specialist plant fair to pick up a few for your own garden.
- [Kendal Flower Show & Plant Fair](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/kendal-flower-show-plant-fair): A delightful event packed full of unusual plants both for sale and on show.
- [AGS Pershore Show 2026 Report](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-pershore-show-2026-report): One never knows what to expect from the early season shows which are so dependent on the previous winter’s vagaries. One glance inside the heavy school hall doors allayed all fears, this was to be a good show. Situated just inside the show hall, the West and Midlands Iris group put on a table display which was both interesting and attractive. Entitled ’50 years of inspiring Iris knowledge’, fittingly, they were awarded a Gold Award to celebrate their Golden anniversary, stepping up from last year’s Silver.
- [AGS South Wales Show 2026 Report](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-south-wales-show-2026-report): After the relentless gloom of preceding weeks, both the sun and AGS shows made a welcome return with the 2026 South Wales show. The sun brought out both the people and plants, with near-record numbers through the door and extra space having to be found on the show benches to accommodate this year’s offering from exhibitors, old and new.
- [AGS Early Spring Show 2026](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-early-spring-show-2026): Last week was very busy for me – I was out giving talks on two of the evenings, and set off for Loughborough on Friday morning, to combine the show with a family visit. As a result, I didn’t manage to produce a diary entry about the Early Spring show at Chelmsford before photographing the Loughborough show. So I am running behind, and it may be a week or two before I catch up.
- [Paul Cook Zoom Lecture 10th March Reschedule](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/paul-cook-zoom-lecture-10th-march-reschedule): This post is for everyone hoping to attend Paul Cook's Zoom Lecture tomorrow, Tues 10th March.

- [AGS Pershore Show 2026](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/ags-pershore-show-2026): One of the great things about going to the AGS shows each week is that it gets me out of the house, and I see from the roadside verges how spring is progressing. Although the year so far has been unremittingly wet, and crocuses, snowdrops and celandines all look battered by the weather, it has generally been warm; this week we spotted the first bushes of cherry plum in bloom as we made our way up to Pershore.
- [SHOWS DISCUSSION PAPER FEBRUARY 2026](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/shows-discussion-paper-february-2026): Here is the paper that was discussed by the show secretaries a couple of weeks ago available for all members to see.
- [Sarah’s Diary February 2026](https://alpinegardensociety.net/news/sarahs-diary-february-2026): With no field trips on the calendar this month, June was all about turning my attention back to the RBGE collection. It was great to have time to really focus on our own plants and spaces, as there never seems to be enough time or hands to get every task done at the correct time in the growing calendar.

As well as generating considerable funds for the AGS, David’s greatest achievement in that time was overseeing the publication of The Encyclopedia of Alpines, which remains a valued text to this day. He has served on the AGS Board numerous times and was President for five years.
- [Bob Worsley](https://alpinegardensociety.net/ags-person/bob-worsley): Bob Worsley joined the AGS in 2012 and supports a host of AGS activities. Anne is best known for her miniature gardens, which could be found on the AGS’s 2025 Chelsea display.
- [Beth Marshall](https://alpinegardensociety.net/ags-person/beth-marshal): Beth Marshall is a botanical gardener and charity fundraiser. - [Dr Rob AMOS](https://alpinegardensociety.net/ags-person/dr-rob-amos): Dr Rob Amos is a senior lecturer at Birkbeck (University of London), whose research focuses on biodiversity and conservation law. Following in the footstep of his grandparents, Elsie and Ivan Willett, he has been a member of the Society from the age of 12, actively supporting the AGS at both the national and local levels during that time. Rob has been involved in the running of the Society since 2016, serving first as a trustee and then taking over the presidency in 2024.
