## Research Projects

- [Ma(R)s](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/mars/) - Ma(R)S, aims to engage a PhD Student (PhDS) in conducting state-of-the-art research and industrial development in the fundamental and highly relevant area of Strongly Consistent Distributed Shared Memory Systems (DSM). Supervised by leading researchers in the field, both from academia (University of Cyprus) and industry (Algolysis Ltd), and leveraging on her involvement in the development of a Proof of Concept DSM (under the two partners), the PhDS will work in two fronts: (i) Theory: to advance the knowledge in the field of DSM by exploring efficient, robust, and practical solutions in highly dynamic environments, and (ii) Practice: develop a Memory-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform for facilitating the deployment, management, and usage of DSM for data sharing and for supporting the next-generation of (collaborative) distributed applications. The entire framework will be deployed and validated in a relevant environment (TRL6). Specifically, the platform will be used to deploy DSM algorithms over a set of stationary servers and over a set of less-powerful peer-to- peer devices. https://projects.algolysis.com/mars/
- [CHARISMA](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/charisma-2/) - CHARISMA, aims to devise next-generation Maritime Surveillance technology leveraging on heterogeneous autonomous robotic architectures, including unmanned aerial, sea surface and underwater vehicles. Key to this innovation is devising both hardware and software that can be attached as an add-on to existing fleets of Unmanned Vehicles (UVs). The addon will enable UVs to collectively form a mesh network for communication at the lower-level, on top of which a Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) service will be deployed. The DSM will act as the connective tissue for decentralised data exchange that will be critical for devising advanced swarming algorithms to conduct Maritime Surveillance. These swarming behaviours will be largely based on data fusion Machine Learning models. To monitor and control these capability-augmented UV swarms, a Maritime Surveillance Digital Twin will also be implemented. By combining the expertise, intellectual property and Proof of Concepts in distributed applications (Algolysis Ltd), maritime research and robotics (CMMI), and digital twins and machine learning (CYENS), we will develop a next generation framework for Maritime Surveillance, that will ensure reliable, robust and dependable data collection, provide a comprehensive digital representation of critical situations for better assessment, and will support decision making and high-level control of UV Swarms by competent operators. The entire framework will be validated and demonstrated in a relevant environment (TRL6). Specifically, the addon device will be deployed over a set of heterogeneous UVs with advanced swarming behaviours capable of specifically monitoring maritime infrastructure (e.g. aquaculture facilities). https://projects.algolysis.com/charisma/
- [MARI-Sense](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/mari-sense/) - MARI-Sense employs smart management, spatial planning, and agile response measures to help preserve the natural environment, securing society, and ensuring economic growth. Its cognitive systems work in synergy with human operators to "make sense" of the maritime environment
- [ARES: A Next-Generation, Erasure Coded, Shared Distributed Storage System](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/ares-a-next-generation-erasure-coded-shared-distributed-storage-system/) - Distributed shared storage services (DSS), is the building block to yield complex, decentralized, cloud applications in emerging technologies (e.g., IoT, VR/AR), as they may offer a transparent cloud storage space where distributed applications can store, retrieve, and coordinate over shared data. The popularity of distributed shared storage services has increased recently, due to the emergence of powerful mobile devices and the need for immediate and reliable access to user data from multiple devices. In this project, the EU- US team plans to run thorough experimental evaluations on the performance of a novel protocol ARES [1] , which implements an Atomic Distributed Shared Storage (ADSS) space over asynchronous, fail prone, message passing network nodes. Such services usually keep copies of the data in multiple network locations, we refer to as replica hosts or servers , to ensure data availability and survivability.
- [Safeguarding the Cultural Heritage of Dance through Augmented Reality](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/safeguarding-the-cultural-heritage-of-dance-through-augmented-reality-schedar/) - This project's vision is that the widespread availability of cultural content in digitized forms is a critical necessity for the preservation of the continuity of our heritage and identity as Europeans. In such a context, digitization and online availability of digitized cultural content, such as dancing, has always been a top-level priority for cultural preservation. Digital storage and manipulation of intangible forms of cultural assets, such as dance performances, offers a whole new range of opportunities in the educational context by allowing integration of our project outcomes with the large-scale online libraries (such as the EUROPEANA repository; the European digital platform for cultural heritage). This will allow not only potential storage of intangible assets, but it will also enable seamless integration with existing resources into frameworks that will be able to exploit the common knowledge representation schemes and be used to provide unprecedented amounts of digital cultural resources by means of recent and emerging technologies for new and exciting educational purposes.
- [Collaborate](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/collaborate/) - Distributed Storage Systems (DSS) encompass the technology powering modern cloud data storage services such as DropBox and Google Drive that are used by millions of users as networked platforms for collaborative applications and data storage. Algorithms for DSS ensure data availability and survivability by replicating data in geographically dispersed network locations. However, a major problem with data distribution is consistency, especially when the storage is accessed concurrently by multiple processes; a key to enabling collaboration. Numerous strategies have been devised to mitigate these issues, however a robust and efficient solution remains elusive. Collaborate (https://projects.algolysis.com/collaborate/), proposes a novel atomic Distributed Storage System built on top of asynchronous message-passing, failure-prone, commodity devices, and providing tight consistency guarantees when the storage is accessed concurrnelty by different processes. Atomicity enables the most natural consistency guarantee as it provides the illusion of a centralised sequentially accessed storage. To enhance the practicality of our atomic DSS, Collaborate will develop and combine the following services: (i) Fragmentation, (ii) Reconfiguration, and (iii) Failure Prediction.
- [Utilizing Efficient Reads for ATomic Objects in 3D Networked Virtual Environments](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/erato-vr/) - The advent of fast highly-available network connectivity in combination with affordable 3D hardware (GPUs, VR/AR HMDs, etc.) has enabled making Networked Virtual Environments (NVEs) possible and available to multiple simultaneous end-users beyond the confines of expensive purpose-built 3D facilities and laboratories. However, the algorithms making possible the NVEs of today are already reaching their limits, proving unreliable, suffer asynchronies and deployed over an inherently fault-prone network infrastructure. Thus, new scalable, robust, and responsive strategies that build on top of unreliable, asynchronous, and fault-prone network infrastructure, must be devised in order to support the needs of the NVEs of the future. Current developments of distributed architectures handle concurrency by either providing weak consistency guarantees (e.g. eventual consistency), or by relying on the bounded life span of inconsistent states. However, recent scientific works are shifting the viewpoint around the practicality of strongly consistent distributed storage spaces by proposing latency-efficient algorithms of atomic read/write Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) with provable consistency guarantees. Our approach is to combine a DSM implementation of ERATO with a hybrid approach leveraging the simplicity of the client-server architecture. This, allows us to take the best features of the Multi-Server architecture and combine them with a low-level Distributed Shared Memory algorithm offering (A) ease of integration with existing VEs and implementation of new ones, since the DSM promises to take care of synchronization and consistency across servers, without application-specific interventions at client nodes and no special hand-off mechanisms between servers for users joining and leaving; and (B) reduced system complexity, and in turn faster development time and lower deployment and maintenance costs.
- [KeepA(n)I: A Methodological Approach for Identifying Social Stereotypes in Artificial Intelligence Applications](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/keepani-a-methodological-approach-for-identifying-social-stereotypes-in-artificial-intelligence-applications/) - KeepA(n)I (pronounced “Keep an eye and/or Keep AI ”) aspires to play a key role in aiding towards achieving Trustworthy AI, promoting a novel solution that will lay the groundwork for detecting bias in AI applications. The project considers high-risk applications of AI and aims at creating an active approach in detecting social stereotypes in the input and output of the AI application, as to inform the developer of the social behavior of the developed application. Consortium partners will perform state-of-the-art research, positioning them at the forefront of the area of FAIR / Trustworthy AI, and addressing the challenges brought about by the “democratization of AI” within Europe.
- [Smart Parts Detector in Manufacturing using Deep Learning](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/smart-parts-detector-in-manufacturing-using-deep-learning/) - We are designing and implementing SmartPartsDetector, a new component for the SHOP4CF EU project, that enables manufacturing SMEs of small parts to optically identify their parts by leveraging state-of-the-art convolutional neural networks (CNN). This fundamental capability can then be used to assist and empower humans by devising a wide range of digital tools, e.g. production quality control software, staff training applications, etc.
- [PREFAIL](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/prefail/) - As the Digital Transformation of Europe, and the rest of the world, is rapidly picking up pace, the underlying physical infrastructure is similarly expanding to keep up with demand generated by over 2 billion connected computers and more than 30 billion smartphones, wearables and IoT devices. Nevertheless, Internet applications and services remain prone to inevitable hardware failures, that lead to data losses and increased maintenance costs. The primary problem lies with the cost of implementing data redundancy by constantly adding expensive hardware to cater to the needs of traditional data replication approaches (e.g. by always keeping copies of a file on multiple servers). With the assistance of an Innovation Associate specializing in Machine Learning, Algolysis Ltd aspires to extend its cloud-based storage device monitoring service (DriveNest - www.drivenest.com) with a robust state-of-the-art failure prediction engine. Reliably identifying soon-to-fail storage devices can be a transformative capability across the ICT sector, as a range of proactive data management and mitigation services can be built on top.
- [DriveNest](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/drivenest/) - Storage devices, such as hard disk and solid state drives, are getting smaller and faster, but are still prone to faults, often resulting in data loss and costly downtime of important technical infrastructure. Despite recent technological advances in hardware design and manufacturing, it is still unclear what the exact causes of those failures are and how to detect an imminent failure; enabling proactive mitigation, such as data replication and backup. Moreover, the storage retail market is flooded with devices of dubious quality, and often times performance and robustness specifications are exaggerated by their manufacturers, hindering the ability of the end-users to make an informed choice of storage devices. DriveNest (www.drivenest.com) is a crowd-monitoring platform of storage devices which are distributed anywhere around the globe. The objective is to collect reliability indicators from devices deployed 'in-the-wild' (not in controlled data center environments), and provide users with statistics and failure forecasting based on predictive analytics. Statistics across a global population of storage devices will enable end-users to purchase storage devices based on hard data, while failure prediction will assist end-users, system administrators, and backup software designers to proactively act upon imminent hardware failures. The project is under constant development and thus constructive feedback is important to us
- [LightSense - Intelligent light sensing for next generation smart grids](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/lightsense-intelligent-light-sensing-for-next-generation-smart-grids/) - The project's primary objective is to respond in a holistic way to the energy efficiency, continuity, and security needs of power distribution networks within Cyprus, regarding timely fault prevention and intrusion detection. The extensive goals are to: Exploit the optical sensing capabilities of the existing optical fiber, on-grid network, to enable the remote and automated, continuous, and timely monitoring of the grid infrastructure integrity of the principal energy supplier within Cyprus; Extract critical information, such as the locations of transmission inefficiencies, such as hot-spots, and provide predictive information regarding the emergence and location of possible faults, in order to ensure reliability and continuity of supply; Address the lack of informed policy with regard to issues of security and reliability in the context of actively monitoring future smart grids at the operations level, in real-time; Monitor unmanned or unsupervised critical infrastructure to prevent unauthorised interference and access.
- [Smart Poultry](https://www.algolysis.com/research-project/smart-poultry/) - The poultry industry is one of the largest agricultural industries worldwide. Due to urbanisation, higher incomes, and a shift to a healthier dietary rich in proteins, demand for poultry meat has been rapidly rising according to the OECD. While the poultry industry provides food and a livelihood for billions of people, it also has significant environmental and health consequences. It is therefore imperative that the quantity and quality of poultry food products (i.e. meat and eggs) increase, while animal welfare and environmental protection are promoted and improved. Algolysis is developing a low-cost, integrated software and hardware ecosystem to monitor and analyze the operational conditions of poultry farms. Through a highly synergistic system, composed of sensors, monitoring devices, data acquisition, and data analytics backoffice, we aim to offer invaluable tools and intelligence to farmers and authorities. In turn, they will be able to implement ideal conditions for the animals and optimize their production. The Smart Poultry project includes the development of a remotely accessible internet platform and custom-built sensing hardware, designed to be easily deployable in poultry farms.
